Videography

Last update 27/7/2021

I’ve been shooting and editing video most of my life in some manner. The last few years i shot and edited a few weddings. It’s not something I have much time for but every now and then i’ll try do something.

I have more weddings to add but they are on broken hard drives and need to be recovered.

I shoot 1080p 24 frames in cinematic mode. I’m not interested in 4k 60 frames super clear footage at the moment. I’ve always liked the look of film than the look of a domestic television show like Neighbours or Home and Away or your local news. In my opinion 24 frames (cinematic mode) ads a nice touch of character to the footage.

Here’s an example of a wedding i shot back in 2017. This is the highlights video.

The goal was to charge a price that was about 20% what a professional wedding videographer might charge but provide at least 80% of the quality.

I can do this because i have a weekly job so I don’t have to rely on making videos for a living. I try to help out people that can’t afford to hire a professional videographer. Many times i’ve heard people not getting a video for their wedding because they can’t afford the $1500-$5000.

I can provide a great wedding video for around a third of most people.

Here’s a photo of some of the equipment i use to shoot video. I shoot on a Nikon D5500 at 1080p HD.

I like using relatively cheap equipment and trying to create something that looks good with it. I’m not a believer you have to always have the latest and greatest technology.

I like taking any footage and making something worth watching from it with some decent editing. The Nikon D5500 is only worth a few hundred dollars now but it’s an awesome video camera. It shoots better video than a lot of the more expensive Nikon cameras.

The D5500 was given a cinematic FLAT shooting mode, flip out screen (vital) and decent low light abilities. Full manual control (adjustable). Paired with the right lens and mic and your good to go.

Lately i’ve been using the Panasonic HC-VX1 4K camera. It has a 2k 24 frames shooting mode which is pretty awesome.

People ask why not just use a phone camera. Answer is this:

* Terrible low light performance. You need a decent size censor to capture more light. Phones are all about being small.

* No back up battery’s. You need lots of back up batteries to change quickly.

* Microphones are terrible. You can buy add on mics to phones but they still not that great

* Storage issues. Shooting HD or 2k or 4k footage all day takes up a lot of storage. You need to change storage cards quickly.

* Terrible image stabilisation. Yes you can remove some shake later on post production but you want as least amount of shake as possible. Camcorders use anti shake. Phones do have it but nowhere near as good.

I hope one day i can use a phone to shoot videos. Phone cameras shoot great day time footage because they get a lot of natural light. You get what you pay for.

Audio mastering with video is critical. Too many videos are ruined by crappy audio. I always run the audio separately and fix each audio clip individually. In my room i use:

* RME UFX converters

* Yamaha NS-10m speakers

* Neumann KH-120a speakers

* Sony MDR-7520 studio headphones

* API 2500 compressor (if needed).

* SonarWorks room acoustic treatment software

* Modestly treated room (proper acoustic foam, bass traps, etc.)

With this setup i can hear the audio better than most people so i can fix things so it’s not annoying when your watching the video. It’s time consuming but vital to a decent video.
